About WWF

WWF is an independent conservation organization working to sustain the natural world for the benefit of people and ecosystems. With over 60 years of experience and an active presence in more than 100 countries, WWF works to achieve both on-the-ground and global policy action.

WWF’s work includes protecting and restoring species and their habitats, transforming markets and policies toward sustainability, and supporting global action to address climate change and nature loss.

WWF brings together people from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, including conservation science, advocacy, human resources, and finance. The organization welcomes applications from individuals who believe they can contribute to tackling global environmental challenges and delivering urgent conservation impact.

What WWF does

WWF works as part of a growing global movement calling for stronger action on climate and nature. The organization advocates for world leaders to set nature on the path to recovery by 2030.

WWF addresses major drivers of nature loss through system-wide changes in how food and energy are produced and consumed, and how financial systems are structured. Through action in different countries, WWF aims to create visible and positive impact in critical places around the world, including areas such as the Amazon and the Coral Triangle.

WWF also recognizes that conservation will only be sustainable if it is owned by, and benefits, local people. Indigenous Peoples and local communities must therefore be at the centre of climate and nature action. WWF is committed to using its resources and global network to support these communities in developing effective local solutions.

Context of the position

WWF Tanzania is implementing the People Powering Biodiversity (PPB) Project, which channels program resources directly to community institutions in the Ruvuma Landscape. The project supports locally driven conservation and sustainable livelihood initiatives.

As project funding reaches the community level, strong financial administration and practical accounting assistance are needed to ensure that resources are managed responsibly and consistently.

An institutional assessment identified capacity constraints in everyday financial handling. As a result, WWF Tanzania intends to engage an Assistant Accountant to provide field-based accounting assistance and operational support under the guidance of the Ruvuma Landscape Accountant.

Purpose of the position

The purpose of this position is to strengthen the quality and consistency of financial administration linked to village-level PPB funding.

The Assistant Accountant will help ease routine operational demands on the Landscape Accountant by providing practical and supportive accounting assistance. The role is intended to promote sound financial practices and reduce fiduciary exposure within the Direct Financing arrangement.

Scope of work and key tasks

The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for supporting financial administration and accounting processes at village and program levels.

Key tasks will include:

  • Supporting financial administration at village level through hands-on guidance.
  • Assisting village personnel to accurately record receipts and payments in simple financial records.
  • Carrying out regular field follow-up visits to review records, check documentation, resolve issues on site, and confirm that expenses correspond to the approved workplan and remain within funding parameters.
  • Providing practical demonstrations at village level to strengthen understanding of basic accounting processes.
  • Assisting in organizing financial and administrative documents using simple and workable filing approaches.
  • Reviewing financial and technical supporting documents submitted by villages before the release of subsequent funding instalments.
  • Helping maintain a structured repository of financial documents at program level.
  • Assisting with the preparation of periodic financial reports and simple year-end financial overviews related to Direct Financing.
  • Flagging emerging issues, irregular patterns, or documentation gaps to the Landscape Accountant.
  • Supporting the implementation of corrective measures identified during reviews.
  • Undertaking additional finance-related duties assigned by the Landscape Accountant in support of project delivery and landscape projects.

Expected outputs

The Assistant Accountant will be expected to deliver the following outputs:

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • At least one year of applied experience in financial administration or bookkeeping.
  • Exposure to NGO, community-based, or public-sector financial environments is an added advantage.
