Job Purpose

Provide leadership, team development, and operational oversight for the Zanzibar branch and its agency network. The Branch Manager is responsible for driving exceptional business growth and profitability, ensuring world-class customer experience, and maintaining strict internal controls and risk management standards.

Key Accountabilities

1. Financial & Business Growth (60%)

  • Formulate and implement strategic initiatives to acquire new business and expand share of wallet from existing clients.

  • Monitor branch performance, maintain accurate portfolio records, and report directly to the Regional Branch Manager and relevant Business Heads.

  • Manage portfolio risks within the bank’s risk appetite while driving cross-selling across Asset Finance, Commercial Banking, Consumer Banking, Direct Sales, Bancassurance, and Securities.

  • Oversee borrowing and non-borrowing accounts to enhance customer loyalty, mitigate credit losses, and drive asset/liability growth.

  • Conduct market intelligence on competitor offerings, local business trends, and regulatory changes to identify growth opportunities.

2. Internal Controls & Risk Management (10%)

  • Ensure full compliance with NCBA policies, KYC, AML, operational risk guidelines, and BCP/disaster recovery protocols.

  • Maintain timely and accurate branch reporting, manage cheque referrals, collect due fees, and maintain strict control over operating expenses (overtime, maintenance, catering, stationery).

  • Achieve satisfactory audit ratings by fulfilling custodian duties, conducting supervisory checks, and closing audit exceptions promptly.

3. Customer Experience (10%)

  • Ensure strict adherence to Turnaround Times (TAT) and service standards across all customer touchpoints.

  • Address customer complaints promptly, coordinate service feedback initiatives, and maintain high standards of branch appearance.

  • Ensure maximum uptime for alternative banking channels, including ATMs and Cash Deposit Machines (CDMs).

4. Brand, Product & Marketing Proposition (10%)

  • Provide strategic direction to branch staff regarding local market priorities and business targets.

  • Oversee branch merchandising materials, brief staff on promotional campaigns, and track campaign sales performance.

  • Build high-level relationships with local influencers, key corporate clients, and business communities; represent the bank in local marketing and CSR events.

5. Learning, Growth & People Management (10%)

  • Lead, mentor, and motivate branch staff to build a high-performance team environment.

  • Set clear performance objectives, conduct appraisals, offer continuous coaching, and ensure staff complete required training and e-learning hours.

  • Manage resource allocation, leave scheduling, and succession planning within the branch.

Qualifications & Requirements

Academic & Professional Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field (Upper Second Class or GPA 3.0 minimum). A Master’s Degree is an added advantage.

  • Professional Certifications: AKIB, CPA, CSAPs, or equivalent financial qualifications.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in computer applications, MS Office suite, and core banking systems.

Work Experience Requirements

  • Overall Experience: Minimum of 8 years of banking experience with solid exposure to Branch Operations, Credit Management, and Business Development.

  • Management Experience: At least 4 years in a managerial role (minimum 2 years in branch operations and 4 years in business development).

  • Track Record: Proven track record of consistently meeting and exceeding financial and business growth targets.

Job Dimensions & Decision-Making

  • Portfolio Size: Balance sheet responsibility of KES 2Bn – 5Bn equivalent.

  • Team Leadership: Direct supervision of 3–5 staff members; indirect supervision of 4–7 staff members.

  • Decision Authority:

    • Managerial decision-making and credit assessment/approval at branch level within set limits.

    • Signing transactions and approving OMNI items within delegated authorities.

    • Operational expenditure approvals (staff overtime, catering, taxi, facility maintenance, and customer recovery budgets).

    • Branch resource allocation and staff leave management.
