Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL) is the largest producer of sugar in Tanzania under the well-known “Bwana Sukari” brand. The company forms part of Illovo Sugar Africa Group, Africa’s biggest sugar producer with extensive agricultural and manufacturing operations in South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini, Zambia, and Tanzania. Illovo Sugar Africa is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Associated British Foods plc (ABF), which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. KSCL operates from Kidatu within the Kilombero Valley, managing two agricultural estates and sugar mills—Msolwa and Ruembe—located in the districts of Kilombero and Kilosa in the Morogoro Region.
KSCL manages the largest crop estate in Tanzania, covering approximately 26,000 hectares. Of this, 10,000 hectares belong to KSCL, while about 16,000 hectares are cultivated by smallholder farmers known as Kilombero Growers. The company produces approximately 126,000 tons of sugar annually, supported by a supply chain that includes around 8,000 grower farmers delivering approximately 600,000 tonnes of cane each year. Approximately 45% of the sugarcane crushed by KSCL is supplied by independent farmers, while 55% comes from the company’s own estates. Over 200 businesses have been established in the Kilombero Valley as a direct result of this supply chain.
