GIZ TANZANIA

TENDER INVITATION

FOR

CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON THE NEWBORN TRIAGE CHECKLIST A TOOL USED FOR OBSERVATION NEWBORN BABIES

Improving health care provision in Tanzania program aims to improve performance of the health system I the partner regions Mbeya and Tanga digitalization of information system and capacity development of key players to plan and provide essential health services

The proggarmme intends among others to contribute in enhancing and expanding obstetric and new born care service and establish further care for critically sick babies. Through the programme health care provides will be trained mentored and their performance monitored during supportive supervision. The programme will as well provide selected equipment (according shortage) and provides some of the supplies. Other support areas will include strengthening referral linkages and improving infection prevention practice

Knowing that over 75% of new born death occurs within the first week of life with 50% of them happening already with the first 24 hours after birth, increased attention to this critical early period in a newborn life will help to reduce neonatal death. Considering this pediatrician overseeing neonatal care wards in Lindi and Mtwara developed the new born triage checklist (NTC) in 2011. The NCT is simple card that uses a checklist system for assessing the health of every newborn after delivery at specific points of time for a total of 3 times within the first 24 hours of life

The newborn triage checklist has been used for several years in health facilities in Lindi, Mtwar and Mbeya and was incorporated with some minor amemends into the national guidelines for neonatal care as national tool for close observation of newborn within first 24 hours of life. However there has  never been any research  conducted on the NCT and it has not been evaluated for its validity of different between healthy newborns and newborns in need for further observation of treatment while review of literature reveals a scarcity of information related to new-born triage

Therefore GIZ wishes to engage experts in maternal and newborn care to conduct research on the NTC to assess its validity. The results of this research will help building a body for evidence surrounding the NTC and newborn triage in low resources setting in general and provide guidance on the usefulness of the NTC as tool for appropriate identifying critical babies and inducing their immediate care.  Potential need for improvement of the NTC will become evident. The research will therefore enhance advocacy on the national wide use of tool for all new born in all health facilities and ultimately contribute to reach reduction of neonatal mortality in Tanzania

SPECIFICALLY EXPERTS SHALL BE REQUIRED TO DO THE FOLLOWING

  • Draft protocol for research on the use completeness, corrects and use friendliness of the NTC card in its ability to identify newborn need specials care and actions taken for the babies including preparations and process of transfer/referral
  • Prepare and test data collection tools
  • Collect analyses and interpret the data
