Country Director, Tanzania

IDH is seeking a Country Director for Tanzania, who will lead strategic growth and operational aspects of IDH. As a Country Director of IDH in Tanzania, you will oversee and direct the planning, execution, and successful implementation of all program activities within the country.

About the Country Director, Tanzania position

Y our primary role is to enhance IDH’s standing in the country as the preferred partner for the transformation of agriculture value chains and food systems. This aligns with IDH’s multi-year plan for 2025 and the 2030 strategy. Currently, IDH’s Business Unit for value chain transformation (VCT) in Tanzania is overseeing three distinct donor programs.

Your responsibilities include establishing the office, forming a new team, designing programs, ensuring program alignment, managing donor relationships, and providing technical and strategic support to the programs in collaboration with the country team. Additionally, fostering regional and local gatherings is crucial to advancing the agenda of transforming African Food Systems. This involves convening major off-takers, governments, and other key stakeholders. The role reports to the Global Director of VCT and necessitates close cooperation with the Program Director VCT teams.

Key responsibilities:

Tasked with overseeing IDH’s strategy development, the role involves ensuring the coherence of diverse programs in Tanzania and the successful execution of programs and annual operating plans. The key responsibilities encompass:

  •  Stakeholder Engagement: Obtain support from partners in the private sector, embassies, donors, civil society, and local government authorities.
  •  Operations: Supervise country operations, including HR, legal compliance, financial management, administration, and staff health and safety. Assume responsibility for country financial administration and annual budgets.
  •  Program Management: Provide effective leadership in managing various IDH programs in the country, ensuring their timely delivery, implementation, and project quality.
  •  Fundraising & Partnerships: Cultivate partnerships, identify future fundraising opportunities, and lead the creation of fundraising proposals and program designs.
  •  Communication: Ensure IDH is recognized in Tanzania as the preferred partner for the transformation of agriculture value chains and food systems.
  •  Global Responsibilities: Represent Tanzania on the IDH Global Leadership Team and at Country Leaders meetings. Coordinate with IDH Corporate HQ on reporting, quarterly, half-yearly & annual planning for program progress, HR, finance, and legal matters.
  •  Country Insights: Provide guidance to IDH management on the ground situation, developments, and other sectors relevant to IDH.
  •  Safety and Security: Ensure the implementation of IDH’s Safety and Security Policy, covering both the country office and its staff, and utilize security levels for travel guidance and risk assessment.
  •  People Management: Act as a motivational leader, fostering motivation and talent while overseeing talent management and development for the IDH Tanzania team.
  •  Office Setup: Take charge of establishing the IDH Tanzania office.
  •  Strategic and Technical Support: Offer support for program implementation through innovative, efficient, and effective strategies.

What you bring

  •  Working and thinking at master’s degree level, in a relevant field preferably in business administration, (agricultural/development) economics, (agricultural) finance, supply chain management, etc
  •  10+ years’ experience in leadership and operating in the interface of public and private sector, driving sector and value chain development and sustainable sourcing of agricultural commodities
  •  A robust network in agriculture private sector, investment and banking, government, and regional governing bodies in East Africa.
  •  Experience in managing (sector and/or sustainability) coalitions and with international development. eGng7Qf B2wWpc
  •  Experience in tackling social and sustainability issues across supply chains from the private sector perspective and awareness of public and private sector stakeholder interest, needs and positions on the topic
  •  Experience in engaging with high level government, private sector, industry representatives and complex institutional landscapes.
  •  Entrepreneurial and professional skills, capability and tenacity to drive continued business engagement. Including courage to confront the status quo and challenge the private sector to change their business practices (e.g. sourcing, services to farmers, etc)
  •  Experienced with designing, implementation, and evaluating inclusive business models and local sourcing strategies in Africa.
  •  Passionate about making a difference to the lives of smallholder agricultural farmers and workers
  •  Experience in people management especially within collaboration in cross organizational self-steering teams
  •  Passionate and at least 10 years work experience of transforming agriculture value chain in Africa
  •  Experience in working in a matrix organization and leading large teams
  •  Proven experience with financial administration and budgets.
  •  Strong communication capabilities at multiple levels (corporate, academic, public sector)
  •  Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Preferably also locally spoken languages in East Africa.
