Global Resource Alliance – Tanzania

Global Resource Alliance – Tanzania (GRA-TZ) is an international non-profit association headquartered in Musoma, Tanzania. It is affiliated with the US non-profit, Global Resource Alliance (GRA).  GRA-TZ promotes natural, holistic and sustainable solutions to the challenges of poverty, malnutrition, disease and environmental degradation in the Mara Region of Tanzania. GRA-TZ has been in partnership with WeForest, a Belgian NGO promoting Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) since 2011. Between 2011 and 2023, GRA-TZ has distributed 2 million tree seedlings distributed to communities and local institutions in the Mara region. In 2023, GRA-TZ and WF have co-developed a holistic forest landscape restoration approach: the Butiama Hillside forest restoration and regreening the surrounding landscape with 3 objectives:

  • Objective 1: participatory forest management
  • Objective 2: forest restoration and agroforestry
  • Objective 3: forest friendly alternative livelihoods

GRA-TZ Hillside Programme

GRA-TZ, in partnership with WeForest, is implementing an eight-year initiative called the Butiama Hillside Forest Restoration Project, re-greening the surrounding landscape in Butiama District starting in 2023. This project focuses on nurturing hillsides to return to forest and increasing the tree cover in the wider landscape. Forest restoration is done by assisted natural regeneration on the hillside and agroforestry systems in the buffer zone of the wider landscape, that will improve the livelihoods of the local population. Implementation of activities in the forest and farming landscapes includes training, technical and governance support and monitoring. GRA-TZ implements the project through the management of tree nurseries, agroforestry, community forest management of the hillsides and monitoring. WeForest is the main donor for the project and provides guidance and technical support on project interventions through the life of the project.

Role

The Forestry Extensionist will assist in implementing all aspects of the Forestry component of the project being attached to the Forester. S/he reports directly to the Forester and when needed shall assist the Agroforestry component, M&E Officer. S/he assists development, implementation and evaluation of core aspects of the Forestry program.   S/he is the Nursery Manager responsible for coordination of all nursery activities from seed securing, sawing, planting, tending & managing, diseased and insect control, nursery equipment, etc.

Responsibilities

Core duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work closely with the Forester in the component’s programs and activities.
  • Participate in the implementation of all forestry intervention activities within project villages to drive the project towards Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) best practices
  • Participate fully in supporting the creation of a Butiama Hill Forest Reserve under Joint Forest Management that is formally recognized under Forest Act led by the F
  • Assist in M&E processes and conduct surveys in coordination with the Forester and M&E Officer
  • Assist the component administrative requests/documents
  • Assist the component in procurement of all items for the forestry program and tree nursery
  • Produce quality deliverables on time

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma in agroforestry, agriculture, forestry, rural development or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two years’ relevant work experience with forestry related programs, preferably in Tanzania
  • Excellent project skills and experience with work plans, M&E, community interactions, training, and reporting
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with stakeholders from different backgrounds: local communities, technical and non-technical and international partners
  • Fluent in Swahili and good command of English – (speaking and writing)
  • In possession of a driving license and experience with riding motorbikes and vehicles
  • Able to relocate and flexible in terms of work hours, traveling and living conditions
  • Must be a citizen of Tanzania

Terms & Conditions

  • Contract type: full-time renewable contract initially for 1 (one) year subject to six months probationary period
  • Location: Butiama, Mara Region
  • Hours of Work: minimum of 8 hours per day (flexibility in daily hours is essential)
  • Reporting line: report directly to the Forester
  • Package: competitive package for a small NGO, with remuneration based on experience

Other requirements

  • In possession of a driving license, experience with driving motorbikes is considered a plus
  • Flexible in terms of traveling and living conditions.
