Job Description: Heavy equipment Mechanic
POSITION OVERVIEW
Department: Open Pit Mining
Reporting To: Supervisor – Maintenance
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

To perform a wide range of mechanical maintenance tasks on various mobile and stationary equipment used in mining operations. The role includes Preventive, Corrective, and Breakdown Maintenance, with the goal of reducing unplanned downtime through effective inspections and timely repairs. The Full Mechanic must ensure adherence to safety standards and company maintenance procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma or Full Technician Certificate in Mechanical/Automotive Engineering or equivalent.
- VETA Trade Test Certificate Grade One in Mechanical/Automotive.
- VETA Level Three in Mechanical Engineering
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Minimum of 5–8 years of experience in the mining or heavy equipment industry.
- Hands-on experience with a variety of mining and construction machinery, including but not limited to:
- Caterpillar Machines ( e.g. EX 374, etc)
- Liebherr Excavators (e.g., 945, 930)
- Graders, Articulated Dump Trucks, and Bulldozers
- Proficient in troubleshooting mechanical faults.
- Basic knowledge of auto-electrical systems and diagnostics.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Conduct daily and scheduled mechanical inspections as per maintenance schedules.
- Respond to field breakdowns independently and efficiently.
- Minimize unplanned repairs through thorough inspections and planned maintenance.
- Comply with all safety procedures before, during, and after task execution.
- Ensure proper completion of repair and maintenance reports.
- Maintain good housekeeping practices in all work areas.
- Foster effective communication within the maintenance team and across departments.
- Show initiative, discipline, and responsibility in task execution.
- Follow company values, procedures, policies, and all regulatory guidelines.
- Meet deadlines for job completion without compromising safety or quality.
- Contribute ideas to improve maintenance planning and execution.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Degree or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is an added advantage.
- Skilled in general mechanical fitting, diagnostics, and repair.
- Competency in operating and maintaining heavy mechanical equipment.
- Strong computer skills and ability to use maintenance software.
- Understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and safety mechanisms.
- Ability to train and support junior staff or assistants.
- Strong understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) protocols.
- Physically and mentally fit to work in a demanding industrial environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Able to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Good command of both English and Swahili.
- Must possess a valid Tanzania driving license and proof of driving competency.
