The position

The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST); an institution of The Aga Khan Development Network, completed a major phase II expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2018.

This expansion aimed at improving the Hospital’s quality of facilities and infrastructure to become an ultramodern 170 bed facility to increase its capacity as a provider of high-quality medical care leading to a tertiary care, referral, and teaching hospital.

The Phase II development focused on expanding key clinical services including a comprehensive cardiology programme, oncology services and neurosciences, as well as the expansion of Orthopaedics and Trauma, Diagnostic Imaging, Critical Care and Women and Child Health programmes.

The Hospital is JCI Accredited (achieved a level of quality and patient service that is equal to the best hospitals in the world) and the teaching site for The Aga Khan University, which offers Postgraduate Medical Education programs leading to Master of Medicine in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Paediatrics and Child Health.

It is also an accredited internship site. As part of the integrated health systems approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities that are located across Tanzania. Currently, 26 such clinics have been established across the country and linked to the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.

POSITION SUMMARY
He/ she provides efficient and effective perioperative nursing care to patients. Communicates continuously with Operating Theatre Team and other medical staff to meet needs of the patients in accordance with policies and procedures as well as quality improvement and patient safety norms.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical development of staff.

  • In collaboration with Nurse Managers, identifies learning needs of the nursing staff in the unit.
  • In collaboration with Clinical Nurse Instructor, formulates annual and monthly educational plans according to the identified needs.
  • Implements the plan according to the set planner through in services sessions and one to one facilitation.
  • Conducts a minimum of five (5) educational activities in the month.
  • Evaluate staff clinical progress and modify learning plans accordingly.
  • Ensure translation of learning into clinical practice.
  • Supervises staff performance and facilitates them in assessment planning and implementation of care.
  • Give feedback to the staff on progress and areas that need improvement monthly.
  • Ensure that staff are trained for operating all the new equipment in the unit.
  • Participate in conducting educational sessions/course/workshop with NES at least once a month.
  • Maintains monthly records of staff educational activities.
  • Maintains regular checks for theatre nurses to observe competencies and suggest training intervention.

Operational and Quality Improvement Roles.

  • Defines clinical indicators, monitors its trends and takes corrective action.
  • Ensure safe delivery of care to the patients.
  • Reports clinical incidences and implement lessons learnt.
  • Actively participates in the follow up of audit recommendations.
  • Pursue institutional mandates of quality improvement and patient safety in their unit.
  • Ensure that nurses in assigned Operating Room can plan and deliver quality care.
  • Monitor and evaluates clinical outcomes.
  • Ensure safe delivery of care of patients in the Operating Theatre
  • Ensuring policy and procedure compliance as per the set standards
  • Directly monitors/mentors and supervises the practice of nursing staff during continuum of novice to expert.
  • Responsible for being a role modeling nursing activities involving delivery of patient care and or interaction with patients and their families.
  • Any other roles as assigned by the Supervisor or his/her Designee.

The requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum Diploma in Operating Theatre management from recognized institution.
  • Minimum of Five (5) years’ experience in a similar set up.
  • Ability to teach, supervise and mentor staff and evaluate nursing staff performance
