 BACKGROUND

The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a Parastatal Organization established by an Act of Parliament No. 23 of 1979 (CAP.59, R.E.2002) and became operational in 1980.  NIMR-Mwanza Research Centre is one of the NIMR Centers located in Mwanza region.   The Centre is currently conducting research on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as well as other diseases of public health importance. The National Institute for Medical Research is looking for the qualified, experienced and well-motivated personnel to fill various positions into different projects at NIMR Mwanza Centre.

 BRIGHT-SAM RESEARCH PROJECT

The Institute is collaborating with Rigshospitalet (Danish National Hospital), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and University of Liverpool to conduct a clinical trial to test the effects of novel Ready to Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) and a program of psychosocial stimulation on cognitive and nutritional outcomes among malnourished children in Mwanza region. Therefore, the Institute is inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified Tanzanian candidates to fill the following positions.

JOB POSITION:  Research assistant (12 posts)

REPORTING TO:  Project Principal Investigator

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To provide psychosocial stimulation education to the caregivers of recruited children with SAM and Moderate Acute Malnutrition; ii. To administer data collection using electronic devices;
  • To provide nutritional education and counselling to the caregivers of recruited participants;
  1. To guide caregivers on making toys from locally available materials; and
  2. To perform any other study-related duty as may be advised by Study supervisor

QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE

  1. A minimum of an upper second class or overall minimum of Grade B for unclassified Degrees in the Bachelor Degree training in Human nutrition, psychology, education in Guidance and Counseling or other related field from recognized training institution;
  2. At least two years work experience in research field;
  • Experience in providing psychosocial support/intervention in research or implementation programs will add advantage;
  1. Excellent written and oral communication skills in Kiswahili and English;
  2. Computer literacy; and
  3. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training

TERMS OF SERVICE:   

One year contract which may be renewed on the basis of performance and mutual     agreement.

 DUTY STATION:

The successful candidate will be based at NIMR Mwanza Centre and regularly visits at study sites.

 COMPENSATION: 

A competitive salary will be offered to the successful candidate as per project budget.
